O Hino da Independência foi composto por Evaristo da Veiga e a sua música é de Dom Pedro I.
Segundo diz a tradição, a música foi composta pelo Imperador às quatro horas da tarde do mesmo dia do Grito do Ipiranga, 7 de setembro de 1822, quando já estava de volta a São Paulo vindo de Santos. Este hino de início foi adotado como Hino Nacional, mas quando D. Pedro começou a perder popularidade, processo que culminou em sua abdicação, o hino, fortemente associado à sua figura, igualmente passou a ser também desprestigiado, sendo substituído em 1831 pela melodia do atual Hino Nacional, que já existia desde o mesmo ano de 1822.
