Pope elects fight against slavery as theme for World Day of Peace
Pontiff chose the 'no longer slaves, but brothers' motto. Francisco has denounced slavery on some occasions.
"Frequentemente acredita-se que a escravidão é um fato do passado. Mas na realidade este flagelo social está muito presente", afirma o comunicado do Vaticano.
"A escravidão tem muitos rostos abomináveis: o tráfico de seres humanos, o tráfico de imigrantes e a prostituição, a escravidão no trabalho, a exploração do homem pelo homem (...). Os indivíduos e os grupos especulam sem vergonha sobre esta escravidão, beneficiando-se dos conflitos no mundo, do contexto de crise econômica e da corrupção", afirma o texto.
No verão passado, Francisco escolheu o lema "A fraternidade, fundamento e caminho para a paz", como lema do Dia Mundial da Paz de 2014.
