A series of conflicts between Russians and Manchus (Chinese caste) ended with the recognition of Russia's Chinese sovereignty on both sides of the Amur by the Nerchinsk Treaty of 1689.
During the Boxer Rebellion, the Chinese insurgents took the city in July 1900. According to the Orthodox tradition, the city was saved by a miracle of Our Lady of Albazin during the bombing of the city by the Chinese, which lasted nearly two weeks.
